Session 1

Intra-operative complications in equine anaesthesia

Session 2

  • Understand the pharmacological considerations encountered by foals undergoing sedation and general anaesthesia
  • Develop an analgesia plan for foals undergoing various procedures
  • Design and develop an anaesthetic management plan for foals including optimising the use of monitoring equipment and being prepared for intra-operative complications

Session 3

Anaesthetising horses with colic. Anaesthesia and analgesia management of the horse with colic

  • Understand the physiological and pharmacological considerations specific to anaesthetising horses with colic, including horses that are systemically compromised
  • Learn about the most common intra-operative complications which may be encountered when anaesthetising horses for colic surgery and how to manage them
  • Develop an anaesthetic and analgesic management plan for a horse undergoing colic surgery
  • Interpret acid base results, electrolyte measurements and monitoring and blood gas parameters

Kate Loomes

Kate enjoyed working in mixed and large animal veterinary practice before undertaking an internship and then residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia at the University of Liverpool in 2012. Kate joined the team at Rainbow Equine Hospital in 2017 after becoming a RCVS-recognised and European Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. All aspects of equine anaesthesia and perioperative care in the hospital keep Kate busy and she also enjoys participating in research projects. Recent collaborations in research projects with fellow anaesthetists have focused on topics including factors affecting recovery quality in horses after general anaesthesia, total intravenous anaesthesia, equine postoperative complications and the effect of body condition score on oxygenation in anaesthetised horses. The hospital supports an internship program allowing Kate to provide teaching and support in equine anaesthesia to vets during their internship and residency programs. She also enjoys being involved with the anaesthesia module for nurses in training via the Liphook nursing school and being a member of the ECVAA Education Committee.
