Session 1
Anaesthetic equipment and drugs
- Understand commonly used items of anaesthetic equipment, including:
- The anaesthetic machine
- Vaporisers
- Endotracheal tubes
- Supraglottic airway devices
- Breathing systems
- Be aware of safety checks to undertake before using anaesthetic equipment
- Be familiar with commonly used anaesthetic and analgesic drugs, including those used for:
- Premedication
- Induction
- Maintenance
Session 2
Preparation for anaesthesia, induction and maintenance
- Know how to prepare equipment and the patient for general anaesthesia
- Be able to assign an ASA category to different patients
- Understand the importance of using safety checklists
- Know how to safely intubate dogs and cats
Session 3
Peri-anaesthetic monitoring
- Realise the importance of monitoring physical parameters, reflexes and vital signs in conscious, sedated and anaesthetised patients
- Understand the different types of monitoring equipment that can be used for more advanced monitoring, including:
- Pulse oximetry
- Capnography
- Non-invasive blood pressure monitoring
- Electrocardiography
- Be able to provide prescribed supportive therapy during recovery from anaesthesia

Qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1980.
Worked in small and mixed animal practice.
Taught veterinary nursing (full time and part time) for 30 years.
Employed by the RCVS as Examiner for the VN examinations for over 20 years, becoming Chief Examiner for the last 10 years of the RCVS’s role as Awarding Body.
Chief Examiner for the AVTAA exams until 2019.
Currently employed part time in referral practice. Also self-employed as Chief Examiner for Central Veterinary Qualifications VN examinations, tutor for VetCPD online CPD courses and co-organiser of the VetCPD Congress, writer for VetLogic student veterinary nurse online training site and provide bespoke, in-house anaesthesia CPD for veterinary practices.
